Schisandra chinensis is a renowned adaptogenic berry, also known as Wu Wei Zi (meaning five flavor fruit) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), known as "gomishi" in Japanese, and "omija" in Korean. This little vine berry is very medicinal and has a delectable, tart taste, though some people state they receive more. of the umami flavor.

As a warming and astringent (drying) herb, schisandra is especially ideal as winter seasonal medicine. Intuitively, this berry feels like heart medicine. Maybe it's the color or that in TCM, schisandra benefits the five yin organs including the heart.

Schisandra is one of few adaptogenic plants who is not a root. Medicinal berries are much more sustainable, as the plant does not have to give up its life tether in order to share its medicine with us. Seeds within the schisandra berries actually hold much of the herbal constituents known as lignans. If making medicine from schisandra, grinding the berries ensures the seeds are broken down and lignans released, which is why we grind our schisandra berries in house and offer this medicine within our Schisandra miel.

Schisandra enhances immunity, vision, and strengthens lung capacity. It also supports digestion and is one of our stronger liver herbs. Both a hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) and a hepatorestorative (restores liver damage), schisandra is ideal for liver and detox protocols. This berry is also somewhat stimulating, a great substitute for caffeine-free energy that replenishes the adrenals instead of depletes them. I often work with schisandra when trying to balance hormonal cycles and this is a great plant for supporting fertility and libido.

David Winston says schisandra is helpful for ADHD and is a strong nervine that increases mental acuity, while also calms shen (spirit) and anxiety. It's amphoteric (balancing) to bloodpressure and cardioprotective. As all adaptogens, schisandra is powerful for helping the body adapt to stress. This little red berry also strengthens the reproductive system and has been shown to lessen the frequency of premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, heightening sex drive, and assisting ovaries.

Schisandra is a wonderful herb with MANY medicinal benefits…and some limitations. Schisandra is not for people taking long-term pharmaceutical medications such as heart medications containing digoxin because schisandra can have a potentiating effect on these drugs. It is also not recommended during pregnancy or lactation because of its drying qualities and could be too stimulating for baby. Lastly, anyone who experiences "brain pressure" or a history of seizures should also avoid ingesting schisandra as those conditions can be exacerbated as well.
